First of all, deep breath. There are good people who find this whole situation deplorable. There are conservatives of faith, centrists and progressive people who are willing to talk but not get involved in this freak show.

Deplorable. There is no other word for it. But we as a culture have some responsibility. And maybe Jerry Springer too. When we allowed yelling and screaming to stand in for debate and civic conversations we lost more than we knew.

When we collectively as a nation allow lies and mis-information to stand unchallenged in a civil manner, even when it supports our beliefs, we lost even more. We now have succeed in having our political dialog come down to who is a C and who is S.

I take political time outs. I seek out sane thinkers and speakers. I try real hard not to curse on social media sites. I hope to network with sane folks that truly want to dialog and find solutions. The road is long but I have to stay on the path. (With rest breaks as needed.)

I had the same "shaking with rage" feeling a few nights ago when that one idiot suggested proper birth control was an aspirin held between the knees. (But let's not get started on that.)

My husband and I have been having a similar women-in-leadership conversation for a few months now, and he asked me what could be done, especially given the general hostility toward politically vocal women of any party. I wish I has an answer for it all, but if I were god for a day, I think I'd institute gender quotas for the Congress. Which insults my conservative tendencies, but would at least get us all closer to equal representation.

I don't know, Heather. I'd run for an office myself if wasn't honestly afraid of the kind of abuse you describe above. Gah.

I so very much agree with everything you've written. I am dismayed at the state of our country for exactly the reasons you state. Do I have to move to Ireland is the GOP get another white house? I don't want to, but I might. They disgust me.
Anyway, thank you for an excellent piece, I really enjoy your political tweets.

I got chills from reading this. My daughter was born two weeks after the '08 election, and my husband and I felt the same way you describe: our daughter will never know it as anything different to have a black president. (Though, it will be our job to teach her how extraordinary it was in that moment.) Now that we're back in an election year, and fear grips me for what might happen next, I think of the awe and wonder of that '08 November day.

Love this. I was with my mom and dad on election night and they were being so negative I had to flee. I called my friend and went by the market and the WHOLE champagne shelf was empty except for one lonely expensive bottle, which I bought and went and laughed and cried and celebrated with her.

The picture made me ill. More wrong does not make it right. America has a terrible reputation, and it is easy to see why. Yes, I agree that the Taliban is wrong, and that war is horrible. But, defiling corpses will never be right or okay for me! Wow, this is the "Few, the proud..." it saddens me to no end.

Great piece, Heather. For what it's worth, I did read it, mostly because anything having to do with the Internet is part of my job, and because clients inevitably want counsel on these things - mine certainly did. I didnt black anything out - my site, my avatar - but I did say a quick prayer to St. Isidore of Seville, patron saint of the Internet, to watch over us all. :)

I realized the tone when writing only because I was so annoyed. I just hate to see people doing something because everyone else is and then trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't support based on something they haven't read. That said I do agree that I need to do more to get people involved and thinking about the process. My frustration just came out in the process.
